 ENGLISH

Our school was purpose built as a boarding school by the Christian philanthropist Charles Edward Baring Young in 1886. He put his faith into practice by establishing Kingham Hill as a place where children with a boarding need could be educated and prepared for life.
The Trust , established by the Founder , administrates the school and its sister foundation, http://www.oakhill.ac.uk/ Oak Hill Theological College in London.
Mission Statement:
To provide a safe, stimulating and supportive Christian environment in which all young people have the freedom and the opportunities to fulfill their unique potential academically, physically, socially and spiritually through dedicated, innovative and enthusiastic teaching and learning.

Vision statement:
To help all our young people develop an exuberance for life and learning, an affection and sense of compassion for their fellow men, serenity, self-control and self-confidence, helping them to turn their weaknesses into strengths.

What the School Does Well
The School has many strong features:

  • Under the leadership of the headmaster and senior staff, the school remains true to its Christian foundations, traditions and ethos.
  • Staff are good role models. Dedicated and hardworking, they teach well and provide a high level of pastoral care. Non-teaching staff provide very good support.
  • Systems for monitoring the progress and personal development of pupils are very good.
  • Support for pupils with special educational needs and those for whom English is an additional language is very good.
  • Pupils are courteous, considerate and well behaved.
  • The wide-ranging extra-curricular activities programme is very good in relation to the size of the school.

Our day students are vital to the vibrancy and diversity that typifies Kingham Hill. They contribute positively and significantly, and are very much part of the family.
Over 70% of our students choose to board and the school aims to recreate as fully as possible the benefits of a well-organised and caring home life.
We have developed a unique boarding system based on seven large detached houses. The number of students in each is only about 40. They are run by husband and wife teams with the support of house tutors. This means that house-parents can really know and care for ‘their children’.
Boys and girls joining the school at ages 11 and 12 go into the mixed junior house of around 50 - Plymouth House. While enjoying all the facilities of the school, these younger students are able to benefit from a lively atmosphere and activities geared to their age group.
On entering Year 9, all students join one of the senior houses and will remain in that house for the rest of their school career. Generally, there are 6 to 8 students of each age group in each house.
In the Sixth Form, students often receive their own study bedroom. In each of the two girls' houses, all windows are security locked and each bed has its own individual panic button.
