Founded in 1842, St. Johnsbury Academy, one of the nation’s exemplary schools, combines the resources, facilities, and curriculum of the world’s leading schools with the personal support and attention of the best small boarding schools. Our diverse student body enjoys a curriculum of nearly 220 courses offered at four levels of difficulty, and an average class size of 12. Course offerings include 21 Advanced Placement courses, 15 comprehensive technology programs, more than 40 offerings in the visual and performing arts, four college level engineering courses, five languages, and four levels of ESL, including an excellent summer ESL program. The extra-curricular program includes more than 40 interscholastic teams, 20 intramural sports, and over 60 organized clubs and activities.

The Colwell Center for Global Understanding at St. Johnsbury Academy supports programs and activities that foster global education. Founded in 2003, the Colwell Center organizes a Reader’s Series whose vision is to encourage reading, cultural literacy, and tolerance by reading fiction and non-fiction from different regions around the world. The Colwell Speaker’s Series invites professionals from the global community to speak to students to expose them to issues that reach beyond our campus. We partner with the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University on several programs to expose our students to professionals and scholars in the field of foreign affairs.

The Colwell International Travel Program coordinates many trips abroad for our students to expand upon international learning. Despite our location in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, our student body represents a level of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and intellectual diversity found in very few places.

We expect our students to be good citizens, to study hard and become independent learners who give back to their community. Our student body of nearly 1000 includes 235 boarding students from nearly half the American states and nearly as many countries. With an emphasis on small classes and student-centered instruction, the Academy remains committed to providing every reasonable opportunity for each student to succeed, proactively and empathetically encouraging each one to be resilient, and providing the needed support and resources to do so.

Our campus is in easy walking distance of a variety of restaurants and two theaters. Day trips to Boston and Montreal are convenient. Nearby skiing, hiking, and mountain biking opportunities caused National Geographic Adventure Magazine to name St. Johnsbury Americas # 1 Small Town for Adventure! Vermont is one of the most beautiful and safest states in America.
